Jane The Virgin S2E9 “Chapter Thirty-One”

Mothers. They shape us in a way no other person does in our lives. By their presence or their absence, they play a role.  And that holds true for everyone on the Jane the Virgin.

In a wonderful shift, the mother we’re contending with the most is Liliana, Rogelio’s mother aka Glamma, who’s come back to visit with a bombshell.  Rogelio’s father, Manuel, has left her for another man.  But only Jane knows, and is told not to let Rogelio know since he won’t be able to handle it. But that doesn’t last long.  As it makes it through the Villanueva family, it finally reaches Rogelio, who wants to show his mother how accepting he is of father.  Resulting in the best awkward dinner party.  Turns out, it wasn’t because Liliana was worried about Rogelio’s reaction but the reality of it once she told him.  Rita Moreno’s performance was just heart wrenching as she let out all of her frustration.  No wonder this woman is a national treasure. Of course, as anything with Jane The Virgin, there’s always more to the story.  Manuel’s arrival at the end reveals the biggest bombshell at all: Liliana has always known about Manuel and they’ve had an arrangement.  To be continued, I’m sure.

Jane is struggling with the time honored tradition of sleep training your child. And the guilt she feels because of it.  Of making time for herself, and not for Mateo.  This is the thing the show has done so well time and time again.  Showing Jane’s struggle into motherhood.  One that actually resembles reality. And her struggle for establishing control and expectations translates into her teaching style.  She coddles her students the same way she coddles Mateo, and she’s being taken advantage of.  Discovering your own authority is never an easy task. But Jane pulls if off, both in the crib and on the court, as she gives into Alba’s advice.

And a mother who is never about to win Mother of the Year: Magda. Continuing her efforts of framing her own very pregnant daughter for Ivan’s murder.  Petra  is trying to find a way out of the situation, with Rafael’s help.  As much as I am #TeamRafael, you can see why Petra and Rafael were happy at one point.  They’re just really sweet together.  Petra is really sweet with him.  And it’s because of him, she finally gets rid of Magda.  And won’t become the nightmare of a mother her own was.

And then the Solano mothers.  Luisa’s mother left her and ended up in a mental institute.  Michael and Susanna are hot on the trail of Mutter, only to find out it’s not Luisa’s mother, but Rafael’s!  The same mother who is sedating her own son while she tries to find the flash drive they traded for Mateo.  Rafael’s mother is Mutter!

Moms, am I right?

  • Jane playing basketball.  Fairly certain, Gina Rodriguez was not acting during that.
  • The age and weight categories during the sleep training bits.
  • The Villanueva women dancing, can’t we just get every week?
  • Tough love works.
  • Michael has a girlfriend.  Michael has a girlfriend!
